A note from whoever built this

So, prom happened.

Hey — I'm a faccha in first year, and this whole thing started as a random idea I couldn't let go of. Ended up spending way too many nights deploying, breaking things, redeploying, fixing bugs at 2am, trying to make emails look professional, building an actual matching system instead of just a random draw — genuinely tried to make this feel like a real product and not a weekend hack.

Also, in the process, I absolutely butchered my COL quiz. Zero regrets. Mostly.

Final numbers: 201 signups — 170 guys, 31 girls. Which, yeah. If I'm honest, that ratio genuinely got to me at some point. I don't fully know if it's just IITD's actual gender ratio playing out, or if a lot of girls just didn't feel like filling out a form some random guy built — maybe a bit of both. Either way, building a whole system around trying to make that imbalance feel fair to everyone, instead of just ignoring it, was probably the hardest and most frustrating part of this entire project.

For anyone curious how the actual matching worked: instead of just randomly pairing people, girls were shown a small group of guys picked based on shared interests and height preferences, and got to pick who they wanted — the moment someone was picked, that was locked in as a final match, instantly. Guys who weren't picked in one round automatically rolled into the next round with a new group, so nobody was just dropped after one try. It wasn't perfect, but it was built to at least be honest about the imbalance instead of pretending it didn't exist.

To the guys who signed up and stuck with it through the rounds — thank you, genuinely. To the girls who did register — thank you even more, you made the whole matching system actually work the way it was designed to.

I'm planning to open this back up for next year's prom too. So if you're reading this as a girl who didn't sign up this time around — no judgment, but genuinely, please consider registering next year. The whole point of this only works if more people give it a shot.

One thing I'm thinking about for next time: capping guy registrations once there are no free girls left to match with, instead of letting everyone sign up and finding out later they're stuck. Still figuring out if that's actually the right call or not.

And yeah I deserve NSS Hours for this Samaj Seva🥀

If you've got something to say to me — good, bad, or "why did you build this instead of studying" — the feedback form's open. Always is.
